The memorial plaque, sometimes known as the 'Dead Man's Penny', was a 12-centimetre disk cast in bronze gunmetal and cast with the individual serviceman's name. It was sent, together with a parchment scroll and a message of condolence from the King, to the next-of-kin of British and Dominion casualties of the War. Approximately 1,150,000 were issued. The plaque and condolence message below were issued to the next-of-kin of Private William Thomson of the North Irish Horse and 9th (North Irish Horse) Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers.
